State of Existence exhibition at University Hospital Galway

Date posted: 3 February 2012

State of Existence by Gerard Bleeker is the first exhibition in a new arts space in University Hospital Galway and will be on display until 2 March 2012.

Artist Gerard Bleeker uses sand on canvas and mdf board to create the artworks in the exhibition State of Existence.  The sand is derived from beauty spots in the Galway region; the sand ranges in colour from white to various shades of grey, text to replace with beige, red and black.  The sand is sourced from places like Doolin, Fanore Beach, Rynville Point, Salthill and the Twelve Pins.  Most of the artworks have landscapes around the area of Galway as their subject matter.

Grains of Sand, grains of substance, grains of spirit,
Sand, beauty out of this modest material.
Colours of sand, colours of the seriousness of existence.

Gerard states: ‘The act of painting itself is a religious experience as well as an intellectual one creating a magical consciousness.’

In the new arts space, Galway University Arts Trust will showcase work from members of the hospital community who take part in the Arts Programme as well as Community Arts Projects.

State of Existence will be on display until 2 March 2012 in the foyer of University Hospital, Galway.
