Coombe Maternity Hospital celebrate a unique evening of poetry

Date posted: 20 March 2012

On Thursday 8 March 2012, the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital (CWIUH) marked International Women’s Day with a unique celebration of Irish poetry in the Coombe Hospital Education Centre. The event was officially launched by President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins and is part of an ongoing initiative to introduce poetry into the hospital.

Poets Dermot Bolger, Katie Donovan, Paul Durcan, Paula Meehan, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill, Enda Wyley and writer Colm Toibín took part in readings on the night and kindly donated a poem/ writing for display the CWIUH corridors. Music was performed by Colm Mac Con Iomaire. The event was part of Dublin Unesco City of Literature’s series Bringing it All Back Home series in association with Poetry Ireland, The Irish Copyright Licensing Agency and Dublin Unesco City of Literature.

The event was coordinated by CWIUH Master, Dr Chris Fitzpatrick and Coombe Mother and Poet Enda Wyley. Enda Wyley’s most recent collection of poetry contains a number of works inspired by becoming a mother for the first time and she is now regularly contributing poems to the CWIUH website.

Dr. Chris Fitzpatrick, Master of the CWIUH said ‘The CWIUH is one of the largest providers of women’s health care in Ireland with more than 9,000 mothers giving birth here each year and we are delighted to have the opportunity to join in the worldwide celebrations for International Women’s Day. It is wonderful to have the opportunity to welcome President Michael D. Higgins and a host of rich cultural talent into the heart of our busy hospital’.
