Recipients of the artsandhealth.ie Film Documentation Bursary announced

Date posted: 26 June 2013

artsandhealth.ie is delighted to announce that artist Tom Meskell and film maker Roisin Loughrey are recipients of a bursary to produce a short film documentation of an arts and health project.

The aim of the artsandhealth.ie bursary award is to encourage high quality, creative documentation of arts and health practice nationally. Tom and Roisin will work together to document the Sacred Heart Arts Programme at Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar, Co. Mayo which is delivered by Tom.

Within the Sacred Heart Hospital is a purpose built arts room where, every week, Tom holds a day of workshops. All patients of the hospital are welcome to partake in these workshops. Most of the participants are long stay care patients and have an acquired brain injury through stroke accident or conditions such as dementia or Alzheimer’s. The arts room is a sanctuary from the routine of the hospital, full of activity and creativity.

In the documentary, entitled The Room, Roisin hopes to explore the small moments of magic that happen through Tom’s art programme. Moments that allow for great growth for both the participants and the artist. Using a very still fly-on-the wall approach The Room will be a gentle yet powerful portrayal of the residents of the hospital and how the arts programme there impacts on their daily life.

Tom Meskell has focused his practice in the area of arts in health over the last fifteen years having worked on arts and health programmes nationally and internationally.

Róisín Loughrey is a filmmaker and artist. She has a studio practice based in the Leitrim Sculpture Centre in Manorhamilton. She has exhibited at home and internationally and has just completed the Art in the Digital World MA at NCAD.
