In March 2012 the Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT) will deliver an introductory lecture and workshops to third year psychiatric nursing students at the Waterford Institute of Technology.  The lecture and workshops have been set up to provide students with an insight into the work carried out by WHAT and in particular the workings of the Music in Mental Health Settings programme which has been running successfully since 2007. The Music in Mental Health Settings programme is currently running approximately 60 sessions a year in six locations within the Waterford area.

The lecture and workshops will be led by WHAT Music Co-ordinator Gavin Barr and musicians Leah Clarke and Liam Merriman. The lecture will present an introductory insight into the working of the organisation and explain the role and benefits of the Music in Mental Health Settings programme. The workshops will give students an insight into how WHAT’s musicians structure and facilitate every music session. Each workshop will be conducted in a practical manner similar to how WHAT presents their music sessions to give a realistic understanding of the work.
