Over seventy people packed the activities room at St Columbanus Nursing Home in Killarney on Thursday 11 October, when Sean Hurley of Radio Kerry officially launched an exhibition of art, stories, and songs, compiled by residents of the nursing home.
The exhibition is the culmination of a project that was devised and facilitated by Ruti Lachs (musician) and Felix Power (visual artist), and hospital activities co-ordinator Margaret Bartlett. It was partly funded by Kerry County Council Arts Office, with support from the Killarney Community Hospital.
The exhibition covers one long wall in the activities room. There are stories, song lyrics, shadow photos, collage, and other artworks, all created by a group of seven residents.
Ruti and Felix facilitated four one-hour creativity sessions in September with a group of seven residents of Kerry Community Hospitals (St Columbanus Nursing Home), focussing on songs, art, and stories. The stories were provided by the group members, and focus on their life experiences and knowledge. Well known songs were sung to enhance the atmosphere, and to stimulate discussion. At each session, there was a related art activity.
