Anamnesis, an exhibition of new works by Marie Brett, will open at the Sirius Arts Centre in Cork on 8 March 2013 and at The Index Gallery, Waterford Central Library, on 23 April 2013. This exhibition forms part of The Amulet project, a process of collaboration between the artist and women who have experienced pregnancy and infant loss. Alluding to the act of recollection, the works explore ideas around the use of amulets or keepsakes to commemorate infant loss.

The Amulet is a national, multi-site participatory arts project, initiated and led by West Cork based artist, Marie Brett, as a community collaborative initiative. The project was informed by a two-year research phase Marie led in partnership with Cork University Maternity Hospital and subsequent collaboration with bereaved parents in partnership with Cork University Maternity Hospital, Waterford Regional Hospital/Waterford Healing Arts Trust and the Mid-western Regional Maternity Hospital in Limerick.

The collaboration explored the idea of the Amulet as an object signifying farewell and memorial specific to pregnancy and infant loss primarily through dialogue, video and photography. This collaboration process has led to the Anamnesis exhibition of audio work, photographic drawings and a colour catalogue with photographs and commissioned essays on the theme which, in the words of the artist, ‘gives voice to sensitive and often hidden aspect of life experience, that of pregnancy and infant loss’. Special thanks are extended to participating bereaved family members who collaborated with the artist.
