Event

An exhibition of artwork by participants on West Cork Arts Centre’s Arts for an Active Mind programme goes on display from 18-28 February 2013 at the Eldon Hotel, Skibbereen.
The Arts for an Active Mind programme is made up of about 28 participants, who meet each week at West Cork Arts Centre to explore painting techniques and contemporary visual art practice with artist Paul Forde Cialis. The programme offers a relaxed and social approach to participants of all abilities over 55 years interested in exploring visual arts.
Each term, the participants take on a new challenge, investigating various approaches to using skills and techniques and looking for new ways to inform and inspire their work. This series of paintings was made in response to an exhibition of work by Dermot Seymour which was shown at West Cork Arts Centre last autumn. Seymour’s distinctive ‘social realist’ approach and inclusion of familiar animals within almost surreal landscapes is reflected in the work by the Arts for an Active Mind participants. Each of these paintings is collaborative in nature with the participants working in small groups over three weeks.
The Arts for an Active Mind programme is managed by West Cork Arts Centre and supported by The Arts Council, HSE, Cork City Council and West Cork VEC. The West Cork Arts Centre wishes to thank the Eldon Hotel for kindly hosting this exhibition.
