The Waterford Healing Arts Trust (WHAT) will showcase a series of felted works produced by women who have undergone treatment for breast cancer and participated in the Trust’s All Wrapped Up programme via two public dance performances by Transition Year students of Newtown School on Friday 26 April 2013.
All Wrapped Up grew from a conversation between radiologist Dr Carmel Ann Daly and Mary Grehan of the Waterford Healing Arts Trust who both recognised the need for positive creative experiences as a means of coping with recovery from breast cancer. The programme, which was sponsored by Roche Pharmaceuticals, began in October 2012. The aim is to engage people who have undergone treatment for breast cancer in a creative activity that promotes a sense of collective sharing and community and celebrates that there is, in the words of the participating women, ‘life after cancer’. Participants were invited to make wraps (scarves) and hats with Tramore-based artist Ger Kennedy through weekly felting workshops in the WHAT Centre for Arts and Health.
Through collaboration with Karen Keogh, transition year co-ordinator in Newtown School, it was decided to dynamically showcase the pieces created at the workshops through two contemporary dance performances by students, which were choreographed by Libby Seward. The performances are planned to promote the positive message of Life After Cancer.
The public performances will take part in the foyer of Waterford Regional Hospital at 1pm and in the vestibule of the Theatre Royal at 3.30pm on Friday, 26 April. Admission is free and all are welcome.
