The Postgraduate Certificate in Arts in Health Care Settings course at NUI Maynooth is one of very few courses aimed specifically at artists (of all art forms) working in healthcare settings. The  course is delivered by the Department of Adult and Continuing Education at NUIM, with the National Centre for Arts and Health (ncah) as co-deliverer and partner.

Students undertake 4 modules:

  • Arts in healthcare settings
  • Reflective practice
  • Group facilitation
  • Teaching and learning

Three modules are undertaken in NUIM and one in Tallaght Hospital.

This course has run for three years and is, as far as we are aware, the only accredited post graduate arts and healthcare course in Ireland. The first three groups of students have completed the course and it certainly attracted extremely highly skilled arts and health practitioners, who were keen to develop theory and understanding to underpin their often highly developed practice. Artists from a wide range of art forms (visual artists, musicans, writers, curators) undertook the course to date and we are now reviewing the course with a view to expanding and improving this course.

NCAH aim to be advertising the 2014 course in the next few weeks, as well as embarking on a major development project to lengthen the placements, the course and develop eventually to Masters level. We may also look to broaden the focus to Arts Facilitation across various sectors (e.g. prisons and disability sector), not just in healthcare. We will also be looking to strengthen the supervisory aspect of the placements, to allow experts in the field to mentor and supervise students as they work through their placements.

Enquiries about the course can be made to hilary.moss@amnch.ie or if you have further general queries you can contact the Department of Adult and Community Education Email: Adcomed@nuim.ie Tel: 01 708 3937.
