Arts for Health, Working with people with Dementia is a professional learning development session aimed at artists working in care settings and care workers delivering arts programmes. It will take place on Friday 20 March from 1:00pm – 5:00pm in the Workspace at West Cork Arts Centre. The sessions will inform the learners’ practices when working with people who have memory loss and dementia. Sarah Cairns will explain methods and techniques to enhance arts practitioner’s communication skills.

Based in West Cork, Sarah has been working for many years in the field of Older Person Care. A qualified Shiatsu therapist, Sarah also holds a certificate in Older People in Dance. She currently works as Activities Director in Bantry General Hospital. Sarah has many qualifications in Dementia-care training including a diploma in Leadership in Dementia Care, and is presently on the training team and working as a tutor for Sonas apc.

Sarah is also co-facilitator on Uillinn’s Here and Now programme. Here and Now takes place in the new West Cork Arts Centre galleries and invites people with dementia, their professional and /or family carers to participate in bespoke facilitated discussions about a selection of artworks on exhibit.

Booking is essential as place are limited to 12 participants. € 8. Tea and coffee provided.

Applicants are asked to complete a booking form to enable the facilitator deliver an appropriate programme. Application will need to be in by Tuesday 17 March 2015.

Arts for Health is a partnership programme based in West Cork implementing a managed arts programme for older people in healthcare settings. It takes place in five Community Hospitals, five Day Care Centres and Bantry General Hospital Care of the Elderly Unit. The partners are West Cork Arts Centre, Cork County Council, Cork Education & Training Board and the HSE. The HSE is represented through the Cork Arts + Health Programme, the Health Promotion Department, the Nursing Directors of Community Hospitals and the Day Care Centres, West Cork.
