Opportunity
artsandhealth.ie invites applications from arts and health practitioners (artists working in healthcare settings, healthcare professionals, arts and health partnerships etc.) for a bursary to produce documentation of an arts and health project. The proposed documentation can take the form of a short film / audio documentary and / or publication which can be widely disseminated with a view to encouraging high quality, creative documentation of arts and health practice and creating a greater national understanding of the nature of this practice. The deadline for application is Friday, 29 May at 12 noon.

Background
Given the nature of arts and health practice, particularly around the confidentiality of health service users, much of it happens behind closed doors and there are challenges in terms of making the process and outcomes of this work public. With this in mind, WHAT partnered with Create in 2012 to deliver a continuing professional development workshop for artists working in healthcare settings entitled ‘Documenting Arts and Health’. WHAT and Create also hosted follow up clinics for individual artists.
A resource pack produced from this initiative which offers guidelines in terms of ethically documenting practice through a range of media was produced. Other useful resources regarding documentation are available on artsandhealth.ie such as the Arts Council’s guidelines for taking and using images of children and young people in the arts sector.
This is the third Documentation Bursary made available by artsandhealth.ie. In 2013, artist Tom Meskell and filmmaker Róisín Loughrey were awarded a bursary to document through film the Sacred Heart Arts Programme at Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar, Co. Mayo which is facilitated by Tom. The completed documentary entitled The Room is available to view on artsandhealth.ie. In 2014, Helium, the children’s arts and health organisation and film maker Siobhan Perry were awarded a bursary to document the Cloudlands project in Dublin’s Temple Street Hospital.
This artsandhealth.ie bursary is funded by the Arts Council and the Cork Arts and Health Programme, HSE South.
Bursary
A bursary of €4000 will be made available to the successful applicant for the production of film / audio documentary and / or publication about an arts and health project.
Eligibility Criteria
Anyone responsible for delivering/co-delivering an arts and health project in the Republic of Ireland, in keeping with artsandhealth.ie’s definition of arts and health, may apply (see www.artsandhealth.ie/about/what-is-arts-and-health).
Who can not apply?
Projects managed directly by WHAT or managed directly by members of the Editorial Panel of artsandhealth.ie cannot apply.
Criteria for selection
The criteria for selection are:
- Quality of arts and health practice
- Quality of proposed documentation in which the viewer is given an insight into the methods, processes and outcomes of the project / programme
- Accessibility of documentation to a range of audiences
- Evidence of good planning, sufficient funding and strong partnerships to support the project / programme
- Potential for wide dissemination of the documentation produced.
- Clarity of proposal
- Track record of lead documenter
- Track record of artist(s) / arts and health practitioner(s) in terms of arts and health
- Value for money
Preference will be given to projects / programmes that have not previously been and would not otherwise be documented.
Timeframe
The closing date for the receipt of applications is 29 May. Applicants will be notified of decisions by 19 June 2015. It is expected that the final documentation will be completed and submitted to artsandhealth.ie by 31 March 2016.
