Create’s annual Networking Day will take place on 30 November 2015 in IMMA. The day will combine presentations, exhibition, panel discussions, and table talks about socially engaged arts practice in both its tactical and strategic manifestations. The day offers opportunities for artists to engage in a rich exchange about practice and varied approaches to collaborative work across artforms.

This year national and international speakers will include Martin Drury (Head of Strategic Development, Arts Council of Ireland) Laurie Peake (Director, Super Slow Way), Dave Beech (artist and Professor of Art at Valand Academy Gothenberg), Alastair Hudson (Director, Middlesbrough Institute of Contemporary Art & Co-director with Tania Brugera of the Asociación de Arte Útil), Benjamin Perchet (Director, Dublin Dance Festival), Catriona Crowe (Head of Special Projects at the National Archive), Tolka Nights artists team Matt Green, Sven Anderson, John D’Arcy, Jennie Guy, Conan McIvor and Stuart Sloan, among others.

This is Create’s third networking day and this year the focus will be on the complex question of support for collaborative practice. How do commissioning bodies take into account the processual nature of durational, collaborative work which engages directly with people and places? What would the optimum institutional frameworks of support for collaborative practice look like? For a socially engaged artist, is entering the Museum inevitably a form of institutional capture? What freedoms might the public sphere offer? Can artists be embedded within civic structures and remain critical? In any of the above contexts, what are the representational challenges that exist for artists and their collaborators as they seek to communicate the complex relational networks they have established? More particularly, how do artists bring the largely invisible labour that is invested in establishing and sustaining those networks into the public domain through ‘official’ project narratives?

Create will also be working with Luncheonette again this year. The day concludes with the launch by Valerie Connor and Daniel Jewesbury (eds.) of Local Authority, a new publication by Fingal County Council Arts Office.
