Off The Wall is a group exhibition by four Mayo-based artists, Breda Burns, Bryan Gerard Duffy, Conor O’Grady and Jo Killalea. Opening on 25 November 2015, the exhibition features a selection of the ideas and works developed during a six-week residency by the artists at the GMIT Mayo campus in a building that was formerly St Mary’s Psychiatric Hospital from 1866 to 2006.

The tradition of de- and re-institutionalisation of buildings with negative histories and the cultural context of the GMIT building itself became important points of reference for all of the artists in residence. The title of the exhibition refers to several points of departure for the four artists, which includes historical and current treatment, perceptions and notions of mental illness, confinement, the ship of fools as a literary construct, madness as represented in a historical, artistic and literary context, the hegemonic status of religious, political, educational and governmental institutions, disorder and non-traditional ways of viewing, the visual language of academia and expressions of otherness as explored through the space.
