It Made You is an original album of songs written by service users of St. Patrick’s Mental Health Services (SPMHS) in collaboration with singer songwriter Sean aka ‘Doctor’ Millar. The album was written, recorded, produced and launched in 2015 to great acclaim with Hot Press calling it an ‘impeccably produced’ and ‘fine album’ (Colm O’Hare). There will be a live concert of It Made You in St. Patrick’s Hospital as part of the First Fortnight festival on 9 January 2016.
It Made You was written via 10 collaborative song-writing workshops between Sean Millar and over 80 people who were resident in SPMHS between December 2014 and May 2015. The album was recorded and produced by Gavin Glass at Orphan Recording and features some incredible performers including Glass himself, ‘Doctor’ Millar, Jack L and Kevin Nolan.
Speaking at the launch in September, St. Patrick’s Music Therapist, Paula Higgins, said, ‘It Made You is a collection of 9 very beautiful and poignant original songs about life, love, loss, strength and recovery. The album is also a celebration of the creativity that exists within each of us, the creativity that connects us so meaningfully to each other. We are incredibly proud of every person who participated in the project for creating such a wonderfully powerful piece of art.’
‘Central to being emotionally healthy is the gift of being able to find meaning in our lives. For many, music and the process of creating music is a central part of finding meaning. Connecting with our creative selves can help us overcome even the deepest challenges and can lift us beyond the everyday to experience the beauty of the arts.’ – Paul Gilligan, CEO of St. Patrick’s
