16 Voices: 1916 witnessed in word and song at St. Luke’s Hospital

As part of a series involving the reading of Witness Statements from participants in the 1916 Rising, members of the staff at St Luke’s Hospital, Kilkenny have invited Eibhlín O’Carroll (Alice’s Restaurant, Naas) to host the reading of the personal description penned in June/July 1916 by Nurse Aoife de Burca (Eva Burke) of her week in the GPO. Nurse Burke was the grand-aunt of recently retired Carlow-Kilkenny Obstetrician/Gynaecologist, Henry Bourke. The event takes place in the New Foyer at St Luke’s Hospital at 8pm on 31 March. Under the Microscope at Great Ormond Street Hospital, London

Under the Microscope at Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) is an exhibition focusing on the complexities of heart disease in young people and on the pioneering work of researchers at GOSH in developing gene therapy for children with rare diseases. The project was developed under GO Create! – the hospital’s arts programme – and explores how children interpret medical information. The exhibition runs until 19 March 2016.  Read More

The Bell Room at Drogheda Arts Festival

Based on oral history from psychiatric nurses from around the country, The Bell Room is a performance installation that examines the job of caring as told by those on the frontline. Upstate Theatre Project, in collaboration with award-winning director Louise Lowe and the community of Ardee, has developed an immersive historical experience exploring health care in 20th Century Ireland.
