October is Louth’s arts and wellbeing programme month with An Táin Arts Centre and the library in Dundalk and Droichead Arts Centre in Drogheda hosting varies events through the month.
An Táin Managing Director Paul Hayes ‘it has long been established that involvement in the arts has positive effects on our metal health. We have put together a varied program for October culminating in An Táin Arts Centre on the 22nd.’
It starts in The Longwalk Shopping Centre in Dundalk with ‘The Bell Room’, a performance installation based on the accounts of psychiatric nurses from St Brigid’s Ardee and around the country. Creative Spark have a new exhibition in An Táin entitled ‘Breathing Space’, “An opportunity to pause, relax, or decide what to do next…” including artists talks and workshops as the exhibition goes on.
Then in Drogheda, ‘Twinkle Twinkle Little Ears’ are two unique concerts presented by Kids’ Classics in association with Droichead Arts Centre and the National Concert Hall. Featuring your favourite lullabies and children’s songs performed by professional musicians in a child-friendly setting in both the Droichead Arts Centre and Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital.
Back in An Táin, theatre company in residence, Quintessence, show a newly devised piece, ‘Cracks’ exploring the issue of mental illness in Ireland.
There’s also something for the little ones in the Main Theatre with ‘Dorothy DoLittle’s Magical Adventure’, where they will learn about healthy eating and exercise.
22nd October is the main Antidote day, starting off with ‘Cracks’ at 2pm, followed by an exhibition launch by Dundalk Youth Centre. Artist Pamela Whitaker has a selection of herbal tonics to rejuvenate and inspire in her Groundswell Existential Remedies display along with music from Music Generation playing throughout the afternoon. Spoken Word Dundalk will then have a two hour open mic session, this will followed by a Pop Up printing workshop as part of the ‘Breathing Space’ exhibition. Also artist Una Curley will run a workshop called Terms of Endearment, demonstrating how to make small rush sculptures.
Finally Pangur Ban Productions in association with the Parkinson’s Association of Ireland presents ‘The Gallant John Joe’, performed by Tom Hickey.
