As part of visual artist Tom Meskell’s ongoing residency at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Castlebar, County Mayo, he has been exploring ideas regarding the patient’s creative visual environment. The Creative Doors project has come out of this process: an idea to reproduce the hall doors of residents’ original homes and place them on the doors of their private and collective rooms in the hospital.

Tom has been researching with the patients and their families, photographing their doors, and developing artwork, writing, drawings and paintings. He has used original artworks by patients, arising from his ongoing visual arts workshops at the hospital. The final collaborative pieces are approximately three metres square, printed in vinyl and installed for a temporary exhibition in May 2017 as part of the Bealtaine Festival, celebrating creativity as we age.

Due to interest and demand, Tom is now preparing more permanent, larger-scale vinyl images for the interior walls of the residents’ rooms for both the Sacred Heart CNU, Castlebar and for St. Fionnain’s CNU in Achill.

The Creative Doors project is a partnership between Mayo County Council Arts Office, artist Tom Meskell and the Sacred Heart CNU, Castlebar.
