Raw Portraits is a series of intimate film studies and live performances originally created in response to Ailish Claffey’s experience as dancer in residence through the National Centre for Arts and Health and expanded in collaboration with Cathy Coughlan, through digital media. Taking place from 5-7 July 2018 at Rua Red in Tallaght, events include an introductory workshop to the world of arts within a healthcare context facilitated by Cami Tomos.
Ailish Claffey is a dance artist and movement practitioner with an interest in health, well-being and older people. Specialising in choreological studies, Ailish works in a collaborative capacity exploring and creating work that examines the complexity of human relationships. Ailish is dancer in residence with The National Centre for Arts and Health, Tallaght Hospital and leads weekly dance classes for those with Parkinson’s Disease at DanceHouse, supported by Dance Ireland.
Raw Portraits celebrates instability and uncertainty, continuing the artist’s exploration of the porous layer, between our inner selves and the world around us. By narrowing the lens, we bring focus to a vast internal landscape, exposing and unfurling the intrinsic grace of our vulnerability.
We all experience injuries through age, illness and our working lives. Both emotional and physical, through our spirit and skin. This exploration becomes particularly poignant for the professional dancer. At what point do we expose these injuries as part of our being? Give in to them? Embrace them?
Funded by the Arts Council, with support from South Dublin County Council, through the Dance Artist in Residence Award. Also supported by Kildare County Council and The National Centre for Arts and Health, Tallaght Hospital.
