The Examination is a documentary performance work by award-winning theatre group Brokentalkers exploring mental health and human rights in the prison system in the UK and Ireland. Showing as part of Dublin Fringe Festival, performances are taking place at Project Arts Centre (7-12 and 14 September, preview 6 September).

Featuring Brokentalkers’ distinctive blend of biography, socio-political discourse and breathtaking theatricality, The Examination is based on historical research and interviews with current life-sentence serving prisoners and is performed by stand-up comedian and former prisoner Willie White.

The production is the outcome of a 12-month research and creative process period that has seen Brokentalkers’ directors Gary Keegan and Feidlim Cannon hold theatre workshops and interviews with prisoners and former prisoners in various settings including Mountjoy Prison and PACE Training and Education Services.

The Examination is a collaboration with Professor Catherine Cox, as part of the Wellcome Trust Award for ‘Prisoners, Medical Care and Entitlement to Health in England and Ireland, 1850-2000’ and is supported by UCD Research. The production was originally commissioned by UCD School of History.
