Artist Marie Brett’s film Yes, But Do You Care? examines the politics of care in the Irish context. Created in collaboration with the dancer Philip Connaughton and members of the Dementia Carers Campaign Network, the work premiered at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in July 2022 and is part of IMMA’s National Collection.
Yes, But Do You Care? responds to the shift in legislation from the Lunacy Act of 1822 to the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Act of 2015. The new law redefines the relationship between the carer and the person being cared for in matters of mental capacity.
‘A complex and poignantly beautiful film… An important work that speaks to and for many in society whose voice is unheard.’ – Helen O’Donoghue, Irish Museum of Modern Art
This exhibition complements The Hidden Mountain, the Fort and the Five Trees, Brett’s first survey show, which SIRIUS is presenting in different iterations across 2022. These exhibitions facilitate a critical review of Brett’s practice, repositioning and furthering her idiosyncratic voice and style within the Irish art scene.
