The all-Ireland Irish Doctors Orchestra will play UCD’s Astra Hall on Sunday 13 November to raise funds for Safetynet Primary Care. Founded during the Covid-19 pandemic, the Irish Doctors Orchestra is an all-Ireland fellowship of medical professionals who are also classically trained musicians. The concept of the IDO is to provide an opportunity for medics from across Ireland to get together and create music as a therapy to the stresses and challenges we all face in our professional lives.
Most recently, the IDO raised over £4000 in their first live performance in Clonard Monastery Belfast in aid of People’s Kitchen Belfast.
Safetynet Primary Care, the charity partner for this performance, delivers healthcare services for those who are socially excluded and who otherwise could not access care. Their services currently include primary care clinics for people on the margins of society, including homeless people and those fleeing the war in Ukraine.
We will have a professional conductor, Ciaran Crilly, and close to seventy musicians on the night. The piano soloist for this concert is a Vascular Surgeon based in Tallaght University Hospital and Knocklyon native, Emily Boyle. Audiences will be treated to Brahms Academic Festival Overture, Brahms Symphony No.4 in E minor and Shostakovich Piano Concerto No.2. This music is famous for its ferocity and concentration of expression. – Dr Aoife O Callaghan, a founding orchestra member and psychiatry non-consultant hospital doctor based in Dublin

Irish Doctors Orchestra
The Irish Doctors Orchestra (IDO) is a unique all-island fellowship of medical professionals who are also classically trained musicians. The concept of the IDO is to provide an opportunity for medics from across Ireland to get together and create music as a therapy to the stresses and challenges we all face in our professional lives. The orchestra was founded in 2020 in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. It follows in the footsteps of other doctors’ orchestras such as the European Doctors Orchestra (founded 2004), Australian Doctors Orchestra (founded 1993) and World Doctors Orchestra (founded 2008).
The doctors join together for rehearsals over a period of days which includes coaching by professional musicians and culminates in a public performance. Venue hire, professional coaching and other costs are all financed by the participating doctors which allows proceeds from the concert to be donated to a local nominated local charity in the city of the concert.
