Neonatologist and Artist, Professor Afif EL-Khuffash, is showcasing his artwork celebrating breastfeeding mothers at two exhibitions in Waterford to mark National Breastfeeding Week 2023 (1 – 7 October).

Presented by ‘We’re Breastfeeding Friendly Waterford’ in partnership with Réalta/Waterford Healing Arts, the exhibitions will run for the month of October at University Hospital Waterford and the Central Library in Waterford City.

Prof EL-Khuffash is a Consultant Neonatologist and Paediatrician at the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin. His artworks of breastfeeding mothers are intimate, raw, and empowering portraits, encompassing the wide range of emotion, experiences, struggles and elation that come with the breastfeeding journey.

He aims to challenge the sexualisation and stigma around breastfeeding through his digital artworks, noting in an interview with the Irish Independent that ‘Women are always judged, no matter what choice they make. We should never judge mothers but simply provide the support and safe environment for them to raise and feed their babies.’
