Tracing the timeline for Arts & Health development in Ireland is the backdrop to facilitated discussion about creative work as transformation or transaction, apprenticeship, cultural ecosystem and the ability of Ireland’s rich tradition of arts and health to collaborate meaningfully with its health and care services.

Taking place as part of the Threads Programme at Creative Brain Week 2025, the Arts and Health Timeline will be led by Réalta, the national resource organisation for arts and health in Ireland, with contributors Justine Foster (Arts for Health Partnership Programme) and Mary Grehan (Children’s Health Ireland Arts in Health Programme).

The timeline has been created by Justine Foster, exploring the development of the Arts for Health programme in West Cork against national and international developments. It is a backdrop to share understanding, and reflect on the future direction of arts and health practice.

The timeline will be added to each day following a discussion led by Réalta. It will be on display throughout the exhibition and is free to view.

Background to the Timeline
The Arts and Health Timeline builds on Less Visible Threads, a celebration of arts and health stories in Ireland, which formed part of last year’s exhibition programme, curated by Réalta / artsandhealth.ie in partnership with Dominic Campbell of Creative Brain Week.

This inspired much discussion about the origins of arts and health in Ireland, its state, status, future and critically its ability to connect with the healthcare services of the HSE.

A rich seam of mature practice exists in Ireland connected to an expanding international movement promoting art as a health positive activity. Ireland has leadership status in this area, but can it sustain it? What patterns emerge over time? What can this teach a wider audience?

Booking information
The discussions at noon on Wednesday and Thursday will be ticketed. Tickets are free, but capacity is limited. Please secure your in person attendance by booking in advance.

Wednesday 11 June
Where do you locate yourself on the timeline? Facilitated discussion by Claire Meaney, Director of Réalta, and Justine Foster, Arts for Health Programme Manager. Book for Wednesday.

Thursday 12 June
What patterns do you see emerging in the timeline? Facilitated discussion by Emma Eager, Réalta Project Co-ordinator / Manager of artsandhealth.ie, and Mary Grehan, CHI Public Art Curator. Book for Thursday.

On Friday 13 June, outcomes from the Timeline sessions will be presented back alongside reflections from other Threads as part of a closing event which is open to the public.

Creative Brain Week is a Global Brain Health Institute innovation at Trinity College Dublin, presented in association with Creative Aging International, and with support from the Atlantic Institute.
