Topographical Journeys is a new exhibition by artist Edwina Bracken at University Hospital Waterford presenting layered, abstract views of the Irish landscape which explore the space between the material culture of the past and our existence in the digital world.
On view on the corridor leading to the Outpatients Department, Topographical Journeys forms part of the Waterford Healing Arts exhibition programme at UHW, managed by Réalta, the national resource organisation for arts + health in Ireland.
Topographical Journeys is inspired by Ireland’s ancient and modern field systems, ring-forts, hill-forts, Neolithic structures, and stonewalls, tangible access points to the past that also serve as reassuring symbols of endurance. The exhibition reflects on how these manmade interventions in the landscape echo the patterns of contemporary networks of connectivity.
Using luminous and acidic colour fields, and clear, delineated lines cutting through the pictorial plane, the paintings invite viewers to contemplate the connections between past, present, and future, and to navigate their own journey through time.
